Demmin

"Someone Else's Tragedy"
work in progress!

In the final days of World War 2, the Soviet Army entered Demmin. Fearing violence and rape, up to 1.000 residents took their own lives. For decades, the mass suicide was suppressed by the pro-Soviet East German government. On the 8th of may, the far-right NPD persist in holding their annual “mourning march” in Demmin, claiming to honor the victims of the mass suicide. A large counter-protest insists that 8th of May should be remembered as the day the Nazis surrendered - and hence a day for celebrating. Unwilling to let the far-right get away with their agenda, they cover the socalled mourning march with confetti and drown it in party music. Meanwhile, the residents of Demmin quietly watch the spectacle unfold from their windows.
